In Memory

Dick Walter - Class Of 1972

Richard Walter

Murphys resident

Richard Erland “Dick” Walter died Monday, June 18, 2012. He was 58.

Mr. Walter was born in Exeter to Don and Ella Walter. Growing up he was fascinated by anything with a motor. Mr. Walter was an accomplished aviator and a car and motorcycle enthusiast. He learned to appreciate wine and the art of wine making from his father and shared the fruit of his labors with his friends and family. Mr. Walter also enjoyed working with explosives and would bring demolished homes back to life with his own architectural and design style. His skills as a landscape architect benefited many in the Central Valley. Many people have trees and shrubs to remind them of his generosity.

Mr. Walter moved from his home in Three Rivers in 1994 to Visalia before relocating to Sonora in 2005. Here he became a skilled blade smith and was involved with re-enactment groups, attending many Rendezvous events with his friends. Mr. Walter also bought and sold American Indian and European trade items.

For the final four years of his life, he spent much of his time at Quyle Kilns in Murphys. He participated in blacksmith classes at Quyle Forge, helped many young people learn the craft and was a member of the California Blacksmith Association.

Mr. Walter is survived by his sister, Jene (Ken) Curell; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of Mr. Walter’s life will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Quyle Kilns, 3353 East Highway 4. Internment will take place Friday, Sept. 7, with Mr. Walter’s family.
